COURSE

“INTRODUCTION TO THE HALAL CONCEPT”
(V E2.0)

INTRODUCTION

The Halal Academy (Escuela Halal) is a private training centre, created by the Halal Institute of Islamic Board (Spain). Its main objectives are to contribute to the rights of Muslim citizens, as well as to raise awareness and understanding of Islam, in its different expressions (cultural, political, economic, religious, etc).

The increasing demand of halal-related training made it necessary to develop a portfolio of products and a unique space for learning, combining the several aspects of the topic: food, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, tourism, finances, etc.

THE HALAL FOOD & BEVERAGES MARKET

A global market based on the needs and preferences of the estimated 1.6 billion Muslims worldwide has emerged as a powerful commercial arena. This creates opportunities for SMEs, especially in developing markets, to take advantage of the estimated USD 1 trillion market represented by the halal food sector (USD 194 billion in non-OIC countries). This sector is increasingly attracting attention for its increasing growth potential (Thomson& Reuters, Report on the State of the Islamic Economy, 2017/18).

The development of the halal sectors in Europe (food, beverages, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, fashion, health, hospitality, entertainment, etc) offers a new horizon of opportunity to build the capacity of SMEs wishing to gain a competitive edge in this area. To recognize, enter and move up the halal sector value chain requires applying a unique set of knowledge and skills. Halal products and services are attractive for European SMEs in two ways: international and domestic markets. On the international scene, big companies (such as Nestlé, one of the largest halal producers in the world) are paving the way for SMEs: they seek to comply with requirements set by destination markets for meeting the expectations of local Muslim consumers. On domestic European markets, SMEs develop their own approaches to serve the European Muslim population, estimated at 25 million (2016).

In the case of Halal Food Production, and its immediate knowledge niche, Food Technology, there is a tremendous need to mainstream the necessary knowledge to ensure European food producers capture a fair share of the potential Halal markets and that the EU remains competitive on these Halal markets that will become more and more … competitive! Some big players in and outside Europe have already consolidated their own R+D units (often in OIC countries) to develop their range of halal products (such as Nestlé, Unilever, Friesland, KFC, Mondelez, etc). However, knowledge on halal food production is not yet available to a large majority of the smaller players in the Food and Beverage industry in the EU.
